How We Support Potty Training at Nursery

Potty training can feel like a big step for children and parents alike. Some children take to it quickly. Others need more time, reassurance and patience. At YMCA Fairthorne Group, we understand that every child is different and there is no single right way to approach it.

Recent headlines have highlighted the scale of the challenge many families are facing. One in four children in England start school without being toilet trained, say teachers. This shows just how important early support, understanding and partnership can be.

We believe potty training should never feel pressured or judged. It should feel supportive, positive and child-centred.

Our Approach is Parent Led

At YMCA nurseries, we work closely with families and follow the routines you are already using at home.

If your child is using a toilet at home, we will continue with the toilet at nursery. If your child is using a potty, we will use a potty here too. We do not discriminate between potty or toilet use. Our focus is what helps your child feel secure and successful.

If your child is most comfortable with a certain potty style or brand, families are welcome to bring this into nursery so we can continue using the same setup your child knows.

Consistency matters. We do not want children trying to navigate two completely different systems at home and nursery.

Making Potty Training Positive

Children respond best when potty training feels calm, encouraging and even a little fun.

We can support the same reward systems you may already be using at home, including:

  • Sticker charts
  • Button jars
  • Praise and celebration
  • Personal incentives that motivate your child

We know some children, particularly some boys, can feel unsure or nervous about using the potty or toilet. Our team uses playful ideas to make the experience feel more relaxed and enjoyable.

For example, we may place fire stickers in the bottom of the toilet bowl and encourage children to “put the fire out”. Small moments like this can turn worry into confidence.

We want potty training to feel encouraging, familiar and comfortable for every child.

Gentle Support Throughout the Day

When a child is in the middle of potty training, regular reminders can make a big difference.

Our teams will gently prompt children throughout the day, helping them recognise when it may be time to try. We do this in a warm and encouraging way, never through pressure or embarrassment.

We want children to feel safe, capable and proud of their progress.

Extra Help Before Starting School

If a child is nearing Reception age and is due to leave our setting soon but is not yet toilet trained, we can provide more targeted support.

This may include:

  • Individual 1:1 encouragement
  • Closer observation of routines and patterns
  • Additional reminders
  • Working in partnership with parents on a joined-up plan

Our aim is for every child to leave our nursery feeling confident and comfortable using the toilet as they move on to school.

You Are Not Behind

One of the biggest worries many parents carry is the feeling that their child is behind.

Please know this. Children develop at different speeds. Potty training is not a race and it is not a reflection of parenting success.

Some children are ready earlier. Others need more time. Both are normal.

At YMCA Fairthorne Group, we are here to support families without judgement and help children take those next steps in a way that feels right for them. If you would like to talk about potty training, school readiness or how we can support your child, please speak to your nursery team. We are always happy to help.
