Before you enrol

Settling & Transition

A gentle start that works around your child, not a rigid one size fits all approach.

How does the settling in process work?

We offer a gradual settling process tailored to your child and their routine. Parents and carers are welcome to stay during early sessions, then we gently build up to longer stays as your child becomes comfortable and secure.

How long does settling usually take?

It varies. Some children settle quickly, others need more time. We work with you to find a pace that feels right for your child.

What if my child is upset at drop off?

We use calm, consistent routines and lots of reassurance. If your child needs extra support, we will talk it through with you and adjust the plan. If a child cannot cope with the daily routine or needs one to one care, we may ask that they stay at home until they are well enough to attend.

Do children have a key person?

Yes. Your child has a key person who gets to know them well and supports their routines, development, and confidence. It also gives you a familiar face to speak with and helps keep communication consistent.

Funding & Fees

Clear answers first. Exact costs can vary by hours and funding, so we keep it transparent.

What funding do you accept?

We accept eligible government funding where applicable. The nursery team can confirm what is available for your child and how it applies to your chosen days and hours.

Do you accept Tax Free Childcare?

In most cases, yes. Please ask the nursery office and they will confirm the payment options available and how to set it up.

Are there any charges on top of funded hours?

There may be additional charges depending on your booking pattern and what is included. The nursery office will talk you through this clearly before you start.

How do invoices and payments work?

Invoices are issued in line with our payment schedule. If you ever need help understanding an invoice, the admin team can break it down for you.

What notice period do you need if we leave or change days?

Notice periods can vary. The nursery office will confirm the current policy for changes, cancellations, or reducing sessions.

Food & Nutrition

Freshly cooked on site, with careful support for allergies, preferences, and weaning stages.

Is all food cooked on site?

Yes. Meals are cooked on site each day. Menus are planned to support balanced nutrition and healthy development, and ingredients and allergens are managed in line with food standards.

How do you handle weaning?

Before your child starts, we ask you to share their feeding routine and where they are up to with weaning. We work closely with you and keep communication regular, so nursery and home feel joined up.

  • We match what you are doing at home as closely as we can
  • We ask you to keep us updated with any new foods tried at home
  • We support different weaning approaches and follow the agreed routine
  • Purees can be requested for meals if needed
Can you support allergies and dietary requirements?

Yes. Allergies and dietary needs should be shared with the team as soon as possible. Where we can, we adapt the existing menu so mealtimes stay inclusive. All meals and snacks have ingredient and allergen lists.

Our nurseries and preschools are nut free zones. Children are only offered water or milk to drink, and any sugary drinks provided will be returned to parents.

What if my child is a fussy eater?

It is very normal. We keep mealtimes calm and positive, encourage children gently, and work with you over time. If a child attends with food that is not suitable for children’s nutritional standards, we can provide substitutes and liaise sensitively with you to improve things together.

Can I see the menu?

Yes. The nursery can share the current menu and talk you through how meals and snacks work in your child’s room.

Staffing & Safety

High standards, secure settings, and a team that takes safety and wellbeing seriously.

What are your staff to child ratios?

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements, and a minimum of two staff are on duty at any one time. Ratios are:

  • Children under two years: 1 staff to 3 children
  • Children aged two years: 1 staff to 5 children
  • Children aged three to seven years: 1 staff to 8 children

For offsite outings, ratios are maintained as above or increased depending on the risk assessment.

Are staff first aid trained?

Yes. Staff complete mandatory training including safeguarding and paediatric first aid. When medication is administered, it is witnessed by a qualified level 3 staff member with up to date first aid training, and recorded in line with procedure.

How is the nursery kept secure?

We follow strict procedures to keep children safe and accounted for. This includes maintaining accurate registers as children arrive and leave, regular headcounts, secure doors and gates, and clear collection and drop off procedures so only authorised people can access or collect a child.

What happens if my child has an accident?

We respond calmly and promptly, give appropriate first aid, and complete an accident or incident form. Parents and carers are called to inform them of any head injury of any kind, regardless of apparent seriousness or visible injury.

Accident and incident records are shared with you in relation to your child. In an emergency we will call an ambulance immediately, and a member of staff will accompany your child until you arrive.

What safeguarding procedures are in place?

Safeguarding is taken seriously and staff follow clear procedures to protect children. If you ever have a concern, you can speak to the nursery manager or the designated safeguarding lead at your setting.

Daily Routine

A predictable flow that helps children feel safe, with plenty of play, learning, and fresh air.

What does a typical day look like?

Days include child led play, focused activities, outdoor learning, songs and stories, meals and snacks, and rest. Routines support confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging.

Do children go outside every day?

Yes. Outdoor learning is part of everyday nursery life. We go out in all seasons, so children experience nature, movement, and fresh air regularly.

How do you support naps and sleep routines?

We work with you to follow your child’s sleep routine as closely as possible. Children are visually checked every ten minutes and checks are recorded on a sleep chart, alongside sleep and wake times.

We follow safer sleep practice. Children are not put to sleep with a bib, drink, food, jewellery, or any unsafe comforter. Babies do not sleep in car seats, bouncy chairs or buggies, and cot rooms are kept between 18 and 20 degrees in line with NHS guidance.

Can my child bring a comfort item?

Yes. Comforters can really help with settling and reassurance. The team can advise what works best for your child’s age and room. We will always make sure any comforter used at sleep time is safe.

Learning & Development

Play based learning with real progress you can see, without pressure on the child.

What learning framework do you follow?

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage. It supports children’s communication, confidence, physical development, social skills, and early learning through play.

Do you use Makaton?

Yes. Each setting chooses one Makaton sign per week linked to a theme or book of the week. Makaton is used in everyday moments like story time, songs, mealtimes, transitions, and emotional reassurance. Children are never pressured to sign, they are encouraged gently at their own pace.

How do you support school readiness?

We build school readiness naturally through daily routines and play. We focus on independence, listening, confidence, concentration, social skills, and physical readiness so children feel prepared for the next stage.

How do you track progress?

We observe children during play and activities and record learning in our online learning journey system. Each week, staff upload a photo or wow moment and any other relevant information, and development is tracked in line with the EYFS.

Children also have key milestones and documents such as a two year old check, transition documents between rooms or to school, and termly summative assessments. Parents and carers are welcome to contribute too.

Communication

You should always know what is happening, and who to speak to if something matters.

How will I receive updates about my child?

We share updates through day to day conversations at drop off and collection and via our online learning journey system. Every week, staff upload a photo or wow moment and any other relevant information, and we share next steps and learning as your child develops.

Your child’s key person helps keep communication consistent, and notable concerns are shared with nursery management so we can support you properly.

Who do I speak to if I have a concern?

You can speak to your child’s key person, the room leader, or the nursery manager. If something feels important, we would always rather you asked.

Do you offer parent meetings?

Yes. Parents’ evenings are held and vary from social gatherings to time slotted meetings with your child’s key person. Your nursery can confirm what is planned for your setting.

Practical Things Parents Always Ask

The little details that make mornings smoother and reduce the last minute panic.

What should my child bring each day?

Typically you will need a bag with spare clothes, weather appropriate outdoor items, and any comforter your child uses. Your setting will confirm the exact list for your child’s room.

Do you provide nappies and wipes?

This can vary by setting. The nursery office will confirm what is provided and what you should bring.

What are your opening hours?

What happens if I am late collecting?

If you think you may be late, contact the nursery as soon as possible. Late collection procedures are in place for safeguarding and staffing reasons.

Is there parking?

Parking arrangements vary by nursery. Your location team can advise the easiest and safest drop off and pick up options.

Can I add extra sessions or change days?

Additional sessions and day changes are subject to availability. The admin team can check space and confirm what is possible.

How do you handle room transitions?

Transitions are planned carefully. Children have supported visits to their new room and staff work together so the move feels familiar, calm, and positive. Transition documents are used where needed to help information move with your child.

Do you celebrate birthdays and special events?

Yes. We celebrate in age appropriate ways and enjoy seasonal events throughout the year to make nursery feel exciting and memorable.

Illness, Absence & Accidents

Simple, consistent rules that protect everyone and keep children safe.

What is your illness policy?

Children who are unwell, infectious, or who cannot cope with the daily routine should stay at home for a minimum of 24 hours to protect other children and staff.

If a child is sent home with a temperature (above 37.8), they cannot return until they are well again, with a minimum of 24 hours after being sent home and 24 hours clear of Calpol or similar medication.

For vomiting and or diarrhoea, children cannot return until 48 hours after the last episode.

What happens if my child becomes unwell during the day?

We will inform you immediately and ask you to collect your child if we have concerns about their wellbeing. We will keep them comfortable and supervised and provide any necessary first aid while waiting for you. If it is a medical emergency, we will call an ambulance straight away.

Do I pay if my child is absent?

Fee and funding rules around absence can vary. The admin team can confirm what applies to your booking and funding arrangement.

How are accidents and incidents recorded?

An accident or incident form will be completed by the staff member responding, and shared with you in relation to your child. Parents and carers are called to inform them of any accident that involves head injuries of any kind, regardless of apparent seriousness or visible injury.

If hospital treatment is needed, this is recorded on a return to nursery form, and we follow reporting requirements where applicable.

Feedback & Support

We want open communication and we take concerns seriously.

How do I raise a concern or make a complaint?

Start by speaking to your child’s key person, the room leader, or the nursery manager so we can try to resolve things quickly through good communication.

If a concern cannot be resolved locally, we will support you through the formal complaints process. Our family friendly concerns and complaints information is displayed in nursery, including how to contact Ofsted if you ever need to.

What if my child needs additional support?

If we notice a child may benefit from additional support, we discuss it with parents and agree next steps together. The focus is always on helping the child feel confident and supported. If a child needs one to one care, we may ask that they stay at home as staffing does not allow for this.

Who is the designated safeguarding lead?

Your nursery has a designated safeguarding lead. The team can tell you who it is and how to contact them.
